NC Pediatric Society Foundation awarded grant from The Eshelman Foundation
The Foundation has been awarded a grant to enhance medical and other services to children and youth in foster care in New Hanover county. Working with Wilmington Health Associates and the New Hanover Department of Social Services, the project proposes to accomplish four objectives: institute standard screening of children and youth in care at each medical visit to determine their immediate needs in relation to psychological distress; deliver parent education and support on the social emotional impact of entry into care and create a context for behavioral concerns as it relates to the trauma of removal and placement; Adopt AAP standards of care (Healthy Foster Care America) by working with local DSS foster care staff to share certain information to support the initial and ongoing medical visits; and strengthen local coordination of assessment and services between the practice and the local community providers.
